Are you getting confused which processor or GPU should you buy or how much RAM should you choose.

No worry I will solve your problem.

First we will have to decide what you are going to do with your PC. So I have divided people in 3 categories.

1) Office going and school/college students : Those people who uses MS word, excel, power-point, do emails, playing low level games etc.

• You should use Intel core i3 (choose newest generation) because core i3 is perfect for office work and projects of school/college students.
• Many PCs vendors provide integrated graphics but if your PC haven’t even the lower level one then you can take any low level GPU (graphics processing unit) like NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 for PCs.
• 4GB of RAM will be good but if you can upgrade 8GB will be more than enough.
• In the last you can change your magnetic hard disk drive with SSD (solid state drive) because SSDs are approx. 10x times faster than 7200rpm magnetic hard disk drive. But this is optional because the price of SSDs are quite high but when you will replace you will notice fast booting, extremely fast file transfer, fast applications response etc. 120GB- 250GB SSD will be enough for you if you don’t store too much movies on your pc.

Avg. cost of laptop or pc in this category will be Rs 25000- 30000 (with SSD).

2) Medium level gamers or video editing or 3-D rendering :

• You should choose Intel core i5 (newest generation that you can get, preferred 8th gen.).
• For graphics you can take NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060-6GB
• 8GB RAM will be good but if your pocket allows you can upgrade to16GB.
• You should use SSD of around 250GB or higher if possible for the same previous reasons because it will be give you great gaming experience. Don’t choose magnetic hard drive.

Avg. cost of laptop or PC in this category will be Rs 60000 – 80000 (with SSD).

3) High level gaming or video editing or 3D graphics rendering :

• You should choose Intel core i7 (newest generation that you can get preferred 8th gen.)
• For graphics you can take NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB or AMD Radeon RX VEGA64  8GB.
• 16-GB RAM will be good but you can take beyond it upto 32-GB if you have good quality mother board and other components that would support it.
• You must choose SSD of around 500GB or more for your system and shouldn’t choose magnetic hard drive as it will hinders in your systems performance.

Avg. cost of laptop or PC in this category will be Rs 100000+  (with SSD).

At some point we all get confuse between core i3, i5 and i7. Today we will cover the difference between them. By the way which processor you are using in your computer? Comment me below….

Basically core i3, i5 and i7 processsors have same fundamental architecture like (sandy bridge, ivy bridge or any new one). Difference between them comes when we compare them on the basis of particular features like hyper-threading, turbo-boost, clock speed and no. of cores available.

When we talk about cores i3 has 2, i5 and i7 have 4 cores. i3 and i7 use hyper-threading technique while i5 doesn’t use it.

When we talk about turbo-boost, i5 and i7 processors use turbo-boost and i3 doesn’t.

So, on the architectural level they all are same but the difference comes when we compare them on the basis of particular features available in the processor.

This is going to be very interesting because in today’s blog I will show you how much area would be occupied by transistors (electronics switch) if they would be replaced by electro-mechanical switches that are used in circuit boards of your home.

We will take AMD Epyc 2017 microprocessor for our calculation which has around 19.2 billion transistors.

Let’s take the area of conventional switch of measurement as length is 3 cm and breadth is 1 cm. So the surface area would be 3*1= 3 cm^2 ( 3 cm square)

Delhi’s surface area 1484 km^2 . So the ratio will be as follows.

Ratio= (area of conventional switch* total no. of transistors in microprocessor)/ surface area of Delhi.

Note: Here I am changing the surface area of delhi from km^2 (km square) to cm^2 (cm square)

= (3 x 19.2x 10^12 )/ 1484x 10^10

= 3.88 times of Delhi. Means you will require 3.88 times of Delhi surface area to put the no. of transistors used in AMD Epyc 2017 microprocessor.

Isn’t looking great how much excellently electronics is changing the world by improvements on the daily basis.

If we will do further calculation, then also can find out how many AMD Epyc 2017 microprocessors would be required to cover the whole earth if the transistors will be replaced by conventional switches.

Planet Earth surface area (cm^2)= 510x 10^12 cm square.

So only around 900 microprocessors would be required to cover the Earth.

I think you all must heard about hyper threading technique. Intel and other microprocessor vendors uses hyper-threading to enhance the performance of processor. Mostly hyper-threading is used in video editing, 3-D rendering, heavy multi-tasking etc.

Intel’s core-i3 /i7 use hyper-threading while core–i5 doesn’t.

In this technique we can virtually double the number of cores the actual processor has. So the efficiency of the processor increases very much.

You can think it like this if you have only one hand and you are eating candies. You will take one candy in one hand and take it the mouth chew and take second candy and chew and continue in the same manner. Now what is happening here is you are wasting time in picking up the candy because the process of chewing candy is very fast in comparison to picking up the candy.

But if you will use both hands, when you will chew candy put by one hand, you can have candy in the other hand for eating. So it will look like that there is no delay during eating and your mouth could do its job continuously without stopping.

Here your mouth is a processor and hand are data lines and candy is a data.

So, in hyper-threading it will look like that you have double the number of processors (virtually) because the single processor is handling the data of two lines.
